egg on one‘s face The Pentagon‘s been left with egg on its face. egg on one‘s face源于人们吃鸡蛋或果酱不小心弄到脸上,自己还不知道。人们认为这是丢脸的事,故以此语指“丢脸”、“出丑”。上句可译为:五角大楼丢尽了脸。 someone‘s face is a picture Her face was a picture when I told her the news. someone‘s face is a picture,可不是“某人的脸是一幅画”的意思,而是指“非常震惊或生气”。上句可译为:当我把这个消息告诉她时,她非常惊讶。 in the can The boy already had one success in the can. in the can 原指电影片子已拍摄好,装进金属盒内(in the can)待放。后喻指“已完成”、“已同意”、“达成一致”。上句可译为:这个男孩已经取得过一次成功。 call on the carpet He was called on the carpet by the boss for failing in his mission. call on the carpet 源自19世纪早期英国英语walk the carpet ,指仆人被叫到客厅里挨训。此语即指“训斥(某人)”、“将(某人)叫去训斥”。上句可译为:他因未完成任务受到老板训斥。 go to the dogs He seems to have gone completely to the dogs and spends all his time in the pub. 人不能吃或没有用的食物常用来喂狗(to the dogs)。如果某人或东西沦落到像喂狗的食物那样,那就等于是废物,完蛋了。因此此语在口语中喻指“堕落”、“完蛋”、“毁灭”、“垮台”。上句可译为: 看来他已完全堕落了,整天泡在酒馆里。 咬文嚼字 top drawer :最高地位 最上层抽屉,喻指“(社会地位)最高地位”(the highest social position)。She is rich but she doesn‘t come out of the top drawer. 她富有,但并不是出身名门望族。 egghead:知识分子、学究 秃顶男人,喻指“知识分子”、“学究”,常用于贬义(usu. derog a highly educated person, perhaps too highly educated)What do these eggheads know about practical thing? 这些学者对实际问题懂些什么? disc/disk jockey:流行音乐节目主持人 唱片骑师,即指“流行音乐节目主持人,尤指在广播电视上”(person who plays and comments on recorded popular music, especially on radio or TV )。此词常简写为DJ. That disc jockey plays nothing but oldies. 那个音乐节目主持人除了放一些老唱片外什么都不放。 church-mouse:一贫如洗 教堂老鼠,喻指“一贫如洗”、“穷光蛋”(very poor)。David is as poor as a church-mouse. 戴维是个穷光蛋。 chicken feed/chicken-feed:零钱、为数甚微的款项 鸡饲料,比喻“零钱”、“为数甚微的款项”(a small unimportant amount of money)They‘re losing $2000 000 on this deal, but that‘s chicken feed. chicken feed. 这笔买卖他要损失200万美元,但这只是笔小钱。
